Henderson Wrestling

Returning for their second year, the Henderson wrestling team had a respectable performance at Saturday’s Sun Valley Vanguard Invitational Tournament. With an overall third place finish behind Malvern Prep and Upper Darby, this is a great confidence boost for the young team. Amongst the contributors to this finish was Jake Reid.

Getting turned to his back early in the first period of the finals match for the 113-pound weight class, Reid was tasked with overcoming a 5-0 deficit. Having wrestled Upper Darby’s Jacob Mejias twice before, both close matches, Jake knew coming out on top would not be easy at this point. However, proving his significant growth from previous years, Reid managed to gain all his points back and then some after making an escape, takedowns, and turning Mejias to his back to come out on top with an 8-7 victory. Reid was awarded first place, improving upon his second place finish from last season, and also being awarded with the outstanding wrestler award.

Finishing alongside Reid as champion was sophomore Matt Phayre at the 138-pound weight class after his opponent had to forfeit due to injury. Second place winners included Kyle Medrow (132-pounds) and Ray Martin (126-pounds) both in second, Weston Frame (160-pounds) and Will Amarant (195-pounds) both finishing in third place, and Jon Earley (170-pounds) and Conner McGuinness (180-pounds) finishing in fourth place.

Other notable accomplishments were Kyle Medrow beating the Henderson career pin record with his 73rd pin, quickly making him one of the most prolific wrestlers in Henderson history.

While not as strong as a team as in years past, there are certainly individuals on this team that are a large force to be reckoned with as post-season wrestling quickly approaches.
